Managing internal parasites in a sheep flock is challenging for all farmers. We are continually learning new ways to manipulate farming practices to favour sheep (not parasites). A Parasite Management Plan will have many tools being used together to reduce larval exposure and maximize stock production.
We are now reintroducing sheep capsules back into the tool box - for those that need them at specific times. Previously, Bionic Plus capsules were removed from the market, along with other controlled release capsules, due to regulatory requirements from the ACVM following detected variabilities in some products. However, Bionic Plus capsules have since undergone rigorous testing to confirm they work as intended.
These capsules are a slow release of Abamectin and Albendazole (BZ), and also contain selenium and cobalt. The drench and minerals are actively released for 100 days. Bionic Plus capsules have a meat withholding of 133 days from administration.
Careful consideration is required on where long-acting products fit into any production system. Drench resistance is on the rise, and protection around these products is required. Knowing your drench resistance status will enable you to make the best decisions on parasite control investment.
These capsules are best used in multiple bearing ewes that have not got adequate body condition or feed available. Treated animals would ideally be run with untreated animals so marking with a colour that stays on for a few months (or tagged) will enable you to do a FEC (faecal egg count) on these animals around 60 days after administration.
Every time we add something new to our tool box for managing parasites we add options and opportunities. Bionic Plus capsules may not be suitable for everyone, but their availability this season is great news for many.
